Storage & home office

Planning custom closets and a home office in a Montreal condo

A storage project works best when the layout follows how you use the room. A wardrobe, a study nook and a home office may share finishes, but each needs a different component list. Here is how to turn your ideas into a sourcing brief for a Montreal condo or plex.

List what the furniture needs to hold

Start with an inventory rather than a door style. For a closet, separate hanging clothes, folded items, shoes, bags and seasonal storage. For an office, list your computer equipment, paper files, books and any objects that need closed storage. Decide which items should be within easy reach and which can go in upper cupboards.

Measure representative objects instead of guessing shelf depth. A row of folders, a printer or a tall pair of boots can change a compartment’s size. You do not need to design the final cabinet yourself; these details help the supplier propose a relevant layout.

Record the room and the access route

Provide approximate wall widths, ceiling heights and existing door and window positions. Photograph baseboards, outlets, radiators, pipes and any uneven corners that affect the available space. Note whether a closet door must remain, be replaced or be removed from the design.

For a condo or upper-floor plex, record stairs, doorways, elevators and the delivery route. Ask how the proposed cabinet parts will be packaged and brought inside. Confirm any access arrangements with the building before fixing a delivery date. Professional site checks and final dimensions are separately arranged before manufacturing.

Plan the work surface around your routine

A home office needs more than shelves beside a desk. Identify the equipment that will stay on the work surface, the position you prefer for the screen and where power or cable access is needed. Leave space to move the chair and open nearby doors and drawers.

If two people will share the room, describe whether they work together or at different times. Request separate pricing for a desk, bookcases, upper cupboards and filing drawers. This makes it easier to simplify one part of the layout without redesigning the entire room.

Compare shelves, drawers and hardware

Simple shelves and hanging rails produce a different quote from a fitted system with many drawers, decorative fronts and lighting. Ask for a cabinet schedule showing dimensions, compartment counts, adjustable shelves, visible panels and handles. Note which parts are included and which are options.

Where DTC hinges or drawer slides are specified, the written quote should identify the exact models, quantities and agreed features. Ask the supplier to confirm the suitability of the selected materials for the intended use. Installation details, including how the cabinets are secured, belong in the approved specification and installer’s scope.

Give each layout its own budget

Vision Cadre’s $600–$2,500 CAD planning target applies to a basic reach-in storage configuration, before taxes and installation. It is not a confirmed selling price for a walk-in closet or home office. Larger systems, extensive drawers, lighting and premium finishes are separately quoted.

As an illustration, a brief can split the project into a basic wardrobe and an optional study nook. Request separate material and delivered-cost lines for each. Supplier pricing, freight, import costs and local delivery must be confirmed before you make a firm decision. No fixed minimum materials budget is advertised; feasibility depends on the selected products and shipping costs.

What to send Vision Cadre

Send photos, available plans, approximate dimensions, a short storage inventory, preferred finishes, your materials budget and timing. Mark any items that are optional. Say whether an installer is already involved so the sourcing discussion can use the right site information.

Our initial sourcing work starts with a $400 CAD deposit covering five hours. Extra coordination is $80 CAD/hour on the final invoice with a time summary; the paid deposit is credited once toward your materials order if you proceed. Professional design, measurements and installation are separately scoped.

Browse Closets & Storage or the Home Office & Study section. We also source laundry room cabinets and kids’ bedroom cabinetry, with separate quotes for those configurations.
